About Celilo

WHAT IS CELILO?
The Celilo stands for Celilo Falls. The falls were located on the
Columbia River near The Dalles. In 1957, The Dalles dam went in
and flooded the falls.
My own heritage is Wasco
and Tlingit Indian. Wascos and other Native Americans traded and
fished near the falls for thousands of years. In 1855, the Wasco
and Warm Springs tribes were relocated to the Warm Springs Indian
reservation in central Oregon. Celilo falls remained important to
the Native Americans. My grandmother told me stories of riding her
horse from Warm Springs to The Dalles to trade goods. My family
continues to pick huckleberries near Mount Adams.
